So, I may be massively biased (I’m not, it’s just amazeballs) but The National Theatre of Scotland can, quite simply, Do No Wrong.
Black Watch is the most amazing piece of theatre I have ever seen (2008) and Beautiful Burnout is a very, very close second (showing now at PIAF, buy ticket IMMEDIATELY). In fact, after scamming my free media tickets this weekend, I’m a-gonna pay the $70 and see it again.
This national theatre has no official home and has only been going since 2006, but the two productions I have seen have literally Blown My Mind. Who would have though that shows with thick Scottish accents and liberal use of the ‘C’ word would have been such a success on Broadway and internationally? The sheer physicality of both these shows, particularly BB drive them to new levels.
The 8-min intensely choreographed fight scene in BB is something to behold. If you get the chance, see either, see both. I promise you won’t be disappointed. And if I ever return to Scotland, I’m begging for a job with these people. Truly Amazeballs.
